The Opportunity: Get well-versed in construction and build the Future of LA Housing

Xtraunit is a design-build firm that lives by the motto, “maximizing pace, multiplying value.” The Project Engineer is the engine of this mission on the ground. This is a critical, hands-on role focused on driving the successful construction of our multifamily projects from the ground up.

This position will be hybrid, between the job sites and the office. You will be on-site daily, in the thick of the action, ensuring that every construction phase is executed with the Excellence in Craftsmanship that defines our brand. You will serve as the essential link between the architectural plans and the physical structure. As an important part of the team, you will also be responsible for the build’s quality, accuracy, and momentum. If you are passionate about construction and want to see your efforts translate directly into creating vital housing, this role is for you.

What You’ll Do: Your Role in Building the Project

Your primary responsibility is to actively help build the project by ensuring it is constructed according to plan, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards.

Inspection & Quality Control:

  • Take ownership of the inspection process for our apartment building projects.
  • Scheduled and led on-site inspections with city officials for all trades.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors to ensure their work is ready for inspection and participate to guarantee a successful outcome.
  • Participate in scheduling and passing inspections for Xtraunit’s self-performed work (foundation, framing, stucco, drywall, etc.).

Field Operations & Coordination:

  • Spend half your day in the field, visiting 2-3 active job sites to monitor progress, solve problems, and coordinate trades.
  • Serve as the field coordinator, ensuring our in-house crews and subcontractors have the information and materials needed to move forward.
  • Order and manage the timely delivery of critical construction materials to maintain project momentum.

Technical Documentation & Communication:

  • Create detailed daily logs, complete with progress photos and notes, using our construction management software, Buildertrend. Your logs will be the official record of the project’s daily life.
  • Manage the Request for Information (RFI) process, working directly with the design team to resolve questions and discrepancies quickly and prevent delays on site.

Project Management Support:

  • Provide essential support for project scheduling and budgeting, offering insights from the field to ensure plans are realistic and achievable.
  • Communicate directly with the Xtraunit team and the accounting department on project-related matters.
  • Assist the pre-construction team with planning and logistics for upcoming projects.

What You Bring: The Skills of a Builder

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in a project engineering role within multifamily or residential construction.
  • Proven ability to read, understand, and interpret construction blueprints and technical specifications.
  • Direct experience with the construction and inspection process in Los Angeles is highly preferred.
  • Proficiency with construction management software is essential (experience with PDF Editor-Bluebeam and Buildertrend is a major plus).
  • A proactive, problem-solving mindset. You don’t wait for instructions; you identify issues and bring them in-house to get solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with everyone from trade crews to city inspectors to the leadership team.
  • Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple responsibilities across several job sites and taking accurate notes.
